Consultation is open

The Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine have jointly launched an online survey which provides the public with an opportunity to inform the development of Ireland’s next National Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

Background

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) causes medicines such as antibiotics to become less effective, or even useless, in the treatment of infection. This increases the likelihood of disease spread, severe illness and increased mortality.

AMR is recognised as one of the top 10 global public health threats by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is also recognised as one of the top three priority health threats by the European Commission's Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA). AMR claims up to 700,000 lives worldwide each year, with over 35,000 deaths per year in the EU. This figure threatens to reach 10 million by 2050.

To address this issue, the EU has developed a One Health approach, which involves coordination between human, animal, and environmental health sectors.

What is Ireland currently doing to address this?

The Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine work together and with other partner agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency to tackle this problem using a holistic OneHealth approach. We also work in collaboration with the WHO and EU Commission to address this global challenge.

As part of this work, Ireland is required to develop, publish and implement a National Action Plan on AMR. We have delivered on this commitment since 2017 through our previous action plans, iNAP and iNAP2. It is now time to develop our third national action plan on AMR.

Purpose of consultation

The Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine are seeking views from the public to inform the development of a new action plan on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) for Ireland.

How to participate

Members of the public/organisations can take part in the consultation process by completing a short survey which should only take 5 - 10 minutes to complete. The survey is open to both individuals and organisations. The survey will ask some questions about you or your organisation. You will be asked some questions on antibiotic use, current policy on AMR, and future actions that Ireland should take to address this important issue.

The closing date for the survey is 5pm on Friday 13 June 2025. It will not be possible to access the online survey after this time.

What will we do with your response?

The data gathered through this consultation will be used for that purpose in accordance with departmental best practice procedures and GDPR. The consultation is anonymous and no one responding is required to provide personal data. We are using a tool called EUSurvey, which will not save any personal data such as IP addresses. Please do not include any personally identifiable information in your answers to the consultation questions.
