Appointments/Reappointments to the Advisory Committee for Human Medicines of the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA).

On the nomination of the Health Products Regulatory Authority, the Minster for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD has appointed/reappointed the following as members of the Advisory Committee for Human Medicines (HPRA).
Prof Brian Cleary
Prof. Cleary has worked in maternity services since 2002 and is Chief Pharmacist at the Rotunda Hospital and Honorary Clinical Professor at the School of Pharmacy at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is Clinical Lead for the Maternal Newborn Clinical Management System. He is a founding member of the Irish Medicines in Pregnancy Service, which is a multidisciplinary service aiming to support safe and effective of use of medicines in pregnancy. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Network of Teratology Information Services. His expertise in maternal health, perinatal pharmacology and pharmacoepidemiology has been of significant value to the Committee. His reappointment will ensure continuity and maintain the Committee’s depth of expertise in maternal and neonatal pharmacology and in the safe and effective use of medicines in pregnancy.
Prof Brian Cleary is reappointed with effect from 1 January 2026 until 31 December 2028.
Ms Margaret Doherty
Ms Doherty has been a registered member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland since 1985. She has worked as a full time community pharmacist for a number of years and is currently the supervising and superintendent pharmacist of Raphoe Pharmacy in Donegal. Previously she was a member of the Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland and held the position of Chair of the Councils Pharmacy Practice Development Committee from 2011-2013. During the same period, Ms Doherty was also a member of the Medication Safety Forum sub-group on Medicines Shortages. Her contributions to pharmaceutical regulation and her experience in the development of evidence-based standards and guidance for the provision of good pharmaceutical practice means she provides a crucial pharmaceutical perspective to the work of the Committee. Furthermore, Ms Doherty has a proven commitment to the national regulatory landscape and brings a patient focused approach which is aligned with the values of the Committee and the wider HPRA organisation.
Ms Margaret Doherty is reappointed with effect from 1 January 2026 until 31 December 2028.
Professor Fidelma Dunne
Fidelma Dunne is a Professor in Medicine at the School of Medicine and Associate Director of the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at University of Galway and a Consultant Endocrinologist at Galway University Hospitals group. Professor Dunne’s research interest is in the area of pregnancy and diabetes with >240 peer review publications, 10,000 citations, H index of 52 with >22m euro in grant funding. She is the recipient of the Norbert Freinkel Award from the ADA (2024) and the European Jorgen Pedersen award (2021) for her research contributions to Diabetes in Pregnancy.
Professor Fidelma Dunne is reappointed with effect from 1 January 2026 until 31 December 2030.
Professor Damien Kenny
Damien Kenny is the Clinical lead of Cardiac Services for Children’s Health Ireland and currently works as a consultant congenital Cardiologist in our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin and Mater Hospital, Dublin. In late 2017 he was appointed as a RCSI Clinical associate professor. He has previously held a Honorary Consultant post in Paediatric Cardiac Transplantation and Heart Failure, Great Ormond St Hospital, UK. In the USA, at Rush University Medical Centre, he was assistant Professor of Paediatrics and Internal Medicine and later worked as the Director of the Cardiac Catheterisation Hybrid Suite. To date he has published over 150 peer reviewed articles and co-authored 20 chapters in international textbooks.
Professor Damien Kenny is appointed with effect from 1 January 2026 until 31 December 2030.
Dr Beatrice Nolan
Dr Beatrice Nolan is a Paediatric Haematology Consultant with Special Interest in Haemostasis and Thrombosis at Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin, Dublin. She is one of only two consultant haematologists trained in the treatment of children with haemophilia and has a national remit in relation to haemophilia and extensive experience in the area.
Dr Beatrice Nolan is appointed with effect from 1 January 2026 until 31 December 2030.
