Re-appointments to the Irish Blood Transfusion Service - 20 July 2021

The Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD, has re-appointed the following members to the board of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service. The re-appointments are from 20 July 2021 to 19 July 2023.

John Malone

Mr John Malone is an Independent Non-Executive Director and business consultant specializing in the area of strategic change management. A Chartered Director and Chartered Management Accountant, he has worked with a number of Ireland's public and private companies, public bodies and international organisations at board level. In addition to his involvement with the Irish Blood Service, he chairs Dance Ireland and sits on the board of the Mater Foundation. Mr Malone was first appointed to the Board of the IBTS on 20 July 2015.

Brian O’Mahony

Mr. Brian O’Mahony is the Chief Executive of the Irish Haemophilia Society, President of the European Haemophilia Consortium and former President of the World Federation of Hemophilia. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (UK) and a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (Ireland ) and an assistant adjunct Professor in Health Service Management in Trinity College, Dublin. Brian O’Mahony has severe Haemophilia B. Mr O’Mahoney was first appointed to the Board of the IBTS on 1 June 2012.

Dr. Ronan Desmond

Dr. Desmond is a consultant haematologist at Tallaght University Hospital and Clinical Senior Lecturer in Haematology at Trinity College, Dublin. He previously worked in in the Molecular Hematopoiesis Laboratory in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) where his research focused on normal and leukemic stem cells in the bone marrow. He was also an investigator in several clinical trials in aplastic anaemia.

He received his medical degree from University College Cork in Ireland in 2000. His internship and residency in General Internal Medicine was completed at Cork University Hospital following which he was awarded membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2003. He entered the Irish Fellowship in Hematology program in 2004 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in London completing his training in 2009. Dr Desmond was first appointed to the Board of the IBTS on 20 July 2015.
