Monthly TrolleyGAR Figures

Three times daily at 8am, 2pm and 8pm. acute hospitals report the number of patients awaiting admission to an inpatient hospital bed. The HSE system known as TrolleyGAR enables daily monitoring of ED performance and helps trigger the hospitals’ response during busy periods.

Each month, the Department of Health will republish HSE TrolleyGAR figures.

August 2019

Provisional TrolleyGAR figures show 9,138 people were counted on trolleys in August, 5% higher than last month (8,671) and 31% higher than August 2018 (6,997).

Trolley numbers for the year to date from January to August were 71,551, a 3% increase compared to 69,465 for the same period last year.

The department is engaging extensively with the HSE this year to identify mitigating actions to bring down trolley numbers and waiting times in the ED in the face of growing demand.

July 2019

Provisional TrolleyGAR figures show 8,679 people were counted on trolleys in the month of July, which was 22% higher than last month and 43% higher than July 2018 (6,086).

June 2019

Provisional figures show 7,114 people were counted on trolleys in the month of June 2019, which was 10.8% lower than May 2019.

Trolley numbers for the first six months of 2019 are 4.7% lower than the same period last year.

May 2019

Provisional figures show 7,976 people were counted on trolleys in the month of May, which was 18% lower than April. Trolley numbers for the first 5 months of 2019 are 7% lower than the same period last year.

April 2019

Provisional figures show 9,708 people counted on trolleys in April, 0.8% lower than March.

This level of reduction for April is disappointing compared to previous years, but trolley numbers for the first 4 months of 2019 together are 8% lower than last year.

March 2019

Provisional figures show trolley numbers for the first quarter of 2019 are the lowest in 5 years.

More work to be done to increase capacity and reduce waiting lists.
