Reforming Apartment Standards

The Government has published new Planning Design Standards for Apartments (2025). These aim to:

Make sure apartments meet high standards and quality for people living in them.
Help deliver more homes by reducing costs and making apartment building more viable.

Compared to previous rules, the changes will lower the cost per apartment, which should unlock more development.

The plan also continues to use Compact Settlement Guidelines, which give more flexibility in how housing density is achieved. This supports building medium and higher-density homes in the right places.
