Strengthening Building Standards and Regulation

Past building failures showed the need for stronger compliance and regulation in construction. Over the last decade, major reforms have improved building control and compliance. Now, the Government is taking further steps to ensure high-quality, safe, and sustainable homes.

What’s Changing?

  • A new Building Standards Regulatory Authority will be established.
  • This independent body will:
    • Act as the national Building Control Authority.
    • Serve as the Market Surveillance Authority for construction products.
    • Promote best practice, compliance, and consistency across the construction industry.

Why This Matters

The new authority will ensure:

  • Stronger oversight of building standards.
  • Safer, higher-quality homes.
  • Greater confidence in the construction sector.

Until the new authority is fully established, a Building Standards Agency will operate under the Local Government (Corporate Bodies) Act, 1971.
