Supporting Local Authorities to Build More Social Homes

Local authorities play a key role in building new social housing. To help them do this, the Government will:

  • Fund dedicated ‘new build’ teams in each local authority. These teams will focus only on delivering social and affordable housing.
  • Provide funding based on performance to encourage strong delivery.

Encouraging More Local Authority Building

To reduce reliance on private sector delivery, the Government wants local authorities to build more homes directly. A new performance fund will reward councils that go beyond their annual targets by giving them extra funding for local community projects.

Tracking Progress

Since 2025, the Department of Housing has been publishing actual housing delivery figures from each local authority. These reports are released quarterly and annually to ensure transparency and highlight where improvements are needed.
