Addressing Homelessness

Supporting Specific Housing Needs

The Government helps people who may need extra support with housing especially older people, disabled people, and Travellers.

These groups can face unique challenges, so tailored housing and support services are provided to help them live independently and feel included in their communities. This approach promotes equality, choice, and a better quality of life for everyone.

Providing More Social Homes

The Government plans to significantly increase the number of new social homes built each year from around 8,000 homes per year now to 12,000 homes per year in the coming years.

To reach this goal, local authorities, Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs), and the Land Development Agency (LDA) will need to work together and increase their building efforts.

Supporting Stability in the Rental Market

Ireland’s rental market is growing fast.

By the end of 2024, there were 328,000 registered tenancies, including 51,230 AHB homes and 2,500 cost rental homes, with over 105,000 private landlords.

The Government is strengthening laws and policies to attract investment, build more rental homes especially apartments and give renters more choice while reducing rents over time.

Investing in Villages, Towns and Cities

The Government is investing in villages, towns, and cities to improve quality of life and community well-being. This includes creating green spaces, walkable areas, and mixed housing for all ages. The focus is on building resilient homes and infrastructure that use resources efficiently, reduce carbon emissions, and help communities grow while keeping their identity.
