The Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan and the Minister for State, Colm Brophy are launching upgraded eGates facilities at Dublin Airport today, marking an important investment in Ireland’s border management infrastructure and passenger processing systems.
Following a competitive procurement process, the Department has signed a contract with supplier Vision Box / Amadeus and have just completed the installation of 25 new and upgraded eGates at Dublin Airport. The procurement was managed through the Office of Government Procurement (OGP) eTenders process, ensuring compliance with public procurement policy and governance standards.
The new eGates introduce enhanced technology designed to improve passenger flow, strengthen security measures and support increasing passenger numbers at Ireland’s busiest airport. The upgraded system includes improved facial comparison technology, enhanced impostor detection measures, a new two-step verification process and the introduction of ID card reader functionality for eligible passengers from participating countries. The new infrastructure will help streamline the arrivals process for passengers while continuing to support robust immigration and border security checks.
In 2025, 6.3 million passengers used the eGates and those figures are expected to increase this year following the installation of the upgraded system.
Speaking before the launch, Minister O'Callaghan said:
“This investment is about ensuring that Ireland’s main international gateway continues to meet the needs of a modern, growing and internationally connected country.
“Dublin Airport welcomed more than 18 million arriving passengers last year, and it is essential that our infrastructure keeps pace with that growth. These upgraded eGates will help create a smoother and more efficient arrivals experience for passengers while continuing to maintain strong and effective border management.”
Minister Brophy said:
“The new eGates have a number of important operational and security improvements, including enhanced facial comparison technology, stronger impostor detection measures and improved verification processes. They also allow eligible passengers to use their ID cards.
“The upgraded system will help staff manage increasing passenger volumes safely and efficiently while continuing to maintain high security standards.”
The investment reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to modernising border management infrastructure and supporting Ireland’s international connectivity, tourism and economic growth. The upgraded eGates will continue to operate alongside existing immigration and international security verification systems, with passengers referred to immigration officers where further examination is required.
