Statement by the Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Jim O’Callaghan on Provisional Crime Statistics Year-end 2025

Starts

''Further to the publication of provisional crime statistics for 2025 by An Garda Síochána, I am very pleased to note the significant reductions in many categories of crime.

''I welcome the reduction in property crime, theft and burglary, including crimes against businesses, organisations and individuals.

''However, it is regrettable to see increases in harmful communications reported. Nationally, the number of harmful communications offences increased by 27% compared to 2024 according to the provisional figures.

''I welcome the reduction in sexual offences reported. However, the statistics for domestic violence incidents show a 2% increase in 2025 and while this is a small increase any incident of domestic violence is of very real concern.

''The provisional figures highlighted a significant increase in fraud offences which will need to be closely monitored. The ongoing public message of vigilance online cannot be overstated.

''Reductions across most offences are welcome and validates the high visibility policing policy I am pursuing with support from the Garda Commissioner. Ongoing recruitment is central to achieving high visibility patrols in our cities and towns.

The proactive approach taken by An Garda Síochána, responding to thousands of calls daily, keeps the public safe. I commend the invaluable work by Gardaí in communities across the State.

''This is supported in 2026 by a record budget allocation of €2.6bn, which will fund the recruitment of up to 1,000 gardaí, 200 Garda staff and 300 reserves.''
