Government at a Glance is the flagship publication of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) on public governance. Published every two years, it presents the latest evidence on tools and resources that can help public administrations address challenges with an emphasises on governance outcomes.
The latest edition published during the summer highlights some of the challenges governments face. Challenges such as rising fiscal deficits, declining public trust, and the urgent need to adapt to demographic, environmental, and digital shifts (green and digital transitions).
The report covers a wide range of topics to support an evidence-based approach to policymaking and governance. Topics looked at in the report include:
- Public Trust and Fairness
- Digital Government Index
- Green Transition Commitment
- Public Service Satisfaction
- Public Participation and Deliberative Democracy
- Green Public Procurement
- Impact Measurement
- Youth Inclusion and Housing Affordability
- Policy Coherence and Public Policy Evaluation
- Green Skills and Public Sector Capacity.
Ireland compares well with other OECD countries in several of the areas covered in the report. For example, 47% of people had high or moderately high trust in government. This is above the OECD average of 39% for 2023 (based on trust survey data). Our strongest performing dimension was data-driven public sector. Building trust in public institutions is, of course, a core aim of Better Public Services. Delivering under each of the strategy’s themes will help achieve its vision for inclusive, high quality and integrated public service provision that meets the needs and improves the lives of the people of Ireland.
