Public input opens on Ireland’s new Government Digital Wallet

A public consultation and testing phase has now begun for Ireland’s new Government Digital Wallet, following its recent launch by Minister Jack Chambers.

The Digital Wallet is a key part of the Digital Public Service Plan 2030, that will make it easier for people to access public services by allowing them to safely store and use digital versions of key documents, such as birth certificates, driving licences and the European Health Insurance Card, on their phone.

For users, this means fewer forms, less repetition, and simpler ways to prove who they are when dealing with the State, whether online or in person. Over time, the wallet is expected to support a wide range of public services and help reduce administrative burden for both citizens and public servants.

This phase of the project is focused on listening to users. Members of the public are being invited to take part in consultation and voluntary testing so they can see how the wallet is shaping up and share feedback on its design and features. That input will help inform how the wallet develops ahead of wider rollout.

Data protection and user control are central to the approach. People will decide what information they store in the wallet and what they choose to share, with only the details needed for a specific service being used.

The work also supports Ireland’s obligations under the EU eIDAS 2 Regulation, which requires all Member States to have a digital wallet available by the end of 2026. This consultation and testing phase is an important step in making sure Ireland’s approach is practical, secure and works for everyday use.
