Minister Calleary announces funding of €217,500 for Gnó Mhaigh Eo

  • the grant will enable the organisation to continue its work to the end of 2026

The Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary, today (Wednesday, 30 July) announced that he has approved a grant of €217,500 for Gnó Mhaigh Eo, for a period of a year and a half, to implement the organisation’s agenda for the period 2025-2026.

Gnó Mhaigh Eo provides support to the business community in Co. Mayo, encouraging them to use the Irish language as they provide products and services to the community. The organisation has been providing a business support service to firms in Co. Mayo for more than a decade, as well as a translation and language consultancy service. With the funding announced by Minister Calleary today, the organisation will be able to continue that work, as well as provide Irish-language classes, run the business awards and participate in business and cultural events in the county.

Announcing the funding today, Minister Calleary said:

“I am very pleased that my department is able to provide this funding to Gnó Mhaigh Eo again this year. For more than ten years now, Gnó Mhaigh Eo has been doing valuable work in contributing to the bilingual image of the County and promoting Mayo as a Gaeltacht county. As a result of that hard work, the Irish language can be seen and heard in businesses, shops and restaurants across the county.

“It is highly important that services be provided in Irish – for the customer and for those who wish to conduct their business through that language. Local business are benefitting from the support they receive from Gnó Mhaigh Eo who are providing a valuable service to the Irish-language community in the county.”

Commenting on the funding announcement, the Chief Executive of Gnó Mhaigh Eo, Niamh de Búrca, said:

“Gnó Mhaigh Eo is delighted that the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht has approved funding of €217,500 for the organisation to the end of 2026. Gnó Mhaigh Eo is an organisation that supports the business community across Mayo and encourages them to use the Irish language as an economic resource which is both valuable and profitable. Gnó Mhaigh Eo provides a business advice, translation and promotional service to business as well as running business and cultural events to support them.

“Gnó Mhaigh Eo is also a lead organisation in two Gaeltacht Service Towns – Castlebar and Ballinrobe. This funding will assist the organisation in fulfilling all of its duties.”

Established in 2011, Gnó Mhaigh Eo supports and encourages the business sector in Co. Mayo to use the Irish language as a worthwhile and profitable resource, and to promote Irish in the wider community.
