Minister Calleary announces over €500k for capital projects in Donegal Gaeltacht

  • Projects, funded under the Department’s Community and Language Support Programme, will provide support to three sporting clubs in Gaeltacht areas

The Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, announced today (Monday, 15 December 2025) that he has approved a grant of up to €508,872 for three sports projects located in various language planning areas in the Donegal Gaeltacht. These initiatives were approved under the Department’s Community and Language Support Programme.

The grants were approved for CLG Chill Chartha, Ruagairí an Chéididh and Cloughaneely Golf Club and are to be used for renovating existing facilities and building new ones.

CLG Chill Chartha

A capital grant of €116,894 was approved for CLG Chill Chartha to build new changing rooms for their training field. The Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta will take place in Cill Chartha in 2026 and these new facilities will be of great assistance as they welcome clubs from right across the country.

Cloughaneely Golf Club

A grant of €327,561 was approved for Cloughaneely Golf Club in Falcarragh to build a new clubhouse. This new clubhouse will include an office, changing rooms, storage rooms, daily lockers, a social space, a kitchen, a bar and bathrooms.

Ruagairí an Chéididh

A capital grant of €64,417 was approved for Ruagairí an Chéididh Soccer Club in Ailt a’ Chorráin, to renovate the existing changing rooms and referee’s room.

Announcing the grants today, Minister Calleary said:

“As Minister for the Gaeltacht, I am committed to supporting Gaeltacht communities to develop first-rate facilities and provide them to the community. There is an important link between sports and the Irish language in the Gaeltacht and sports clubs have a central role in the language planning process. These grants will provide first-class facilities which will greatly benefit the membership of the clubs and the surrounding communities.

“These initiatives are good examples of the kind of grant aid available under the Community and Language Support Programme for Gaeltacht groups and organisations and I am certain that members of the local community, young and old, will be able to benefit from the various facilities enabled by this funding.

“I commend the committees’ work towards improving football, soccer and golf facilities for the Gaeltacht communities and these initiatives will no doubt have a positive impact on their local areas.”
