Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary, today (Tuesday, 22 July 2025) officially opened works undertaken as part of the Omeath Village Regeneration Strategy funded under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF).

The works included the regeneration and revitalisation of the centre of Omeath Village and provide a new shared space, pedestrian priority zone and improved linkages to the Great Eastern Greenway.

The project supports the development of the village as a destination on the greenway, attracting users to the village centre, facilitating the creation of visitor-focused local businesses and contribute to the overall sustainable social and economic growth of Omeath.

The scheme is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) and Louth County Council.

Speaking at the event, Minister Dara Calleary said:

"I am delighted that my department has been able to make an almost €3 million investment, through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund, into this project which will encourage social and economic growth by setting up the village to capitalise on the increased visitor numbers along the Great Eastern Greenway and the Narrow Water Bridge area. These works will add greatly to the town’s tourism offering as a base for exploration on the Cooley Peninsula.

“I would like to congratulate Louth County Council and the project partners in delivering this project. This is what the RRDF is all about – tackling vacancy and dereliction and breathing new life into our rural town centres, creating opportunities for further growth and development.”

At the official opening, Cllr. Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council stated:

“From the scenic public realm improvements in Omeath to the vibrant upgrades at St Helena’s in Dundalk, and the much-needed new play area in Termonfeckin, these initiatives show how strategic investment can transform local spaces. They reflect Louth County Council’s ongoing commitment to building inclusive, welcoming environments across the county. I want to thank the local groups and council teams whose dedication brought these projects to life.”

The scheme was delivered by Louth County Council and designed and led by Building Design Partnership Ltd (BDP). Glas Civil Engineering Ltd. was contractor for the project.

On his visit to Louth, Minister Calleary also opened a new playground and recreational area in Termonfeckin.

Speaking at the opening of the playground, Minister Calleary said:

“The investment of over €200,000 into this much needed playground, under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, will provide the community with a top-class amenity and focal point in the area. The playground was designed with the community in mind and I hope that families get to spend many happy moments here in the years to come.”
