Gateway gives safe and secure online access to many Government services
The Department of Social Protection is today announcing that the 3 millionth person has registered for an account on the MyGovID platform.
MyGovID, a service provided by the Department of Social Protection, provides users with a safe and secure ‘single sign on’ to online public services in Ireland. It is designed to facilitate a more joined-up Government approach, with more sharing, more reuse and more integration between public bodies.
MyGovID provides access to a range of online public services in Welfare, Revenue, Transport, Education, Agriculture and more. The full list of services that can be accessed is in Appendix 1.
Commenting on today’s announcement, Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys TD said:
“MyGovID is a joined-up Government approach that gives people a single point of access to many online Government services. Today we are marking a significant milestone where 3 million people have now created and are using a MyGovID account. MyGovID enables people to securely access Government online services quickly and at a time that is convenient for them.
“For example, in the Department of Social Protection people can avail of the www.MyWelfare.ie service, which gives them access to a huge range of our services without having to post a paper form or call into their local Intreo Centre. The delivery of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment to nearly 900,000 people would have been much more difficult if we did not have this key piece of digital infrastructure.
“I would encourage anyone who hasn’t already done so to register for MyGovID and avail of the range of Government services that are available.
“A verified MyGovID account can be registered without any difficulty and ensures greater access to an increasing range of Government services in a safe and secure environment.”
Welcoming the growth in users, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath TD said:
“Delivering services online improves user access and user experience. Increasingly people look to transact business online and expect that their public services are accessible online at any time that they wish to access them. The Irish public service is working hard to meet these expectations and as a country we have an ambition to be at the forefront of delivering public services digitally. MyGovID provides people with a safe and secure ‘single sign in’ to their public serivces. It is designed to be convenient and accessible and the huge growth in users this year is a testament to the success of this cross-government project.
“The range of services that can be accessed through MyGovID is expanding all the time and I would encourage everyone to look into the benefits of this system and register for an account.”
Minister of State Smyth with responsibility for Public Procurement and eGovernment, said:
“One of the aims of this Government, under Civil Service 2030 Digital First Strategy, is to build better digital public services. A safe and secure digital identity is a key cornerstone of this ambition.
“I welcome the news that over 3 million account holders are engaging with public services through MyGovID. The increased adoption of MyGovID shows that the public want to access services online because it is quick and efficient to do so.”
To register for a MyGovID account, a person can go to MyGovID.ie.

MyGovID is an online platform that provides people with safe and secure access to many Government services.
There are two levels of accounts available. A basic account enables a person to access services such as
- Checking eligibility for dental or optical benefit
- Accessing job vacancies on the JobsIreland website
A more secure or verified account gives access to a broader range of online public services such as
- The capacity to apply for a driving licence
- Applying for a student SUSI grant
- Applying for the National Childcare Scheme
- Applying for a Basic Payment scheme from the Dept of Agriculture
- Requesting a tax clearance certificate from Revenue
- Accessing social welfare payment and PRSI contribution details online
The verified account also enables the person to apply for a range of Social Protection schemes and payments such as Jobseekers and Illness payments without having to call into an Intreo Centre or submit an application through the post.
