We will be recruiting full-time Medical Assessor roles for the Department of Social Protection in 2025. Positions are available in Cork, Longford, and Waterford.
Who are Medical Assessors
Our team of medically qualified doctors conduct assessments on applications to specific schemes and provide medical opinion based on medical reports and other evidence furnished by the applicant, with a small proportion of in-person clinical assessments for specific schemes.
What a Medical Assessor does
- provide impartial opinion for the guidance of Deciding Officers
- carry out assessments and reviews of eligibility for social welfare schemes
- carry out medical assessments either ‘at desk’ or ‘in-person’
- assess a person’s suitability to engage in work re-integration programmes
- assess disabilities from occupational injuries and disease
- assess the care needs of a child or an adult in care related schemes
- carry out academic activities under the direction of Chief Medical Officer/Deputy Chief Medical Officer

Pay scale
The pay scale for Principal Officer grade is €92,889 - €127,295 (October 2024)
Current Personal Pension Contribution pay scale for the grade applies.
Requirements for candidates
- you must be registered with the Medical Council of Ireland
- six years clinical experience is essential
- experience in Occupational Health or disability assessment desirable
