It is used by the following sections:
- Finance: Payroll (Tax certificates, P60's, P45's and P35's and so on, MyPay and CORE)
- Revenue: Housing Loans and Mortgages
- Housing: For use with the Housing database (housing applications), Disabled Persons Grants, Essential Repair Grants
- Environment: Water Grants, Waste Collection Permits, Casual Trading Licences
- Corporate Services: Higher Education Grants, Gateway- Labour Activation Scheme, CORE

The PPS Number is forwarded to the following bodies:
The Revenue Commissioners - in compliance with tax regulations (P35's, P45's and so on, grant applications, tax relief at source and so on).
The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government - PPS Numbers are supplied here in respect of grants in order to recoup money.
The Department of Social Protection: Staff Sick pay applications to DSFA will contain PPS Numbers.
Pobal in respect of Gateway Labour Activation Scheme.
MyPay, Laois County Council in respect of MyPay, salary, wages and pension payments..
What future plans has your County Council for the use of the PPS Number?
In line with national developments, for example REACH, this authority will continue to record PPS Number's where possible and maintain databases for future references. Subject to National Legislation, PPS Number could be used in future in conjunction with the Register of Electors.
There is a duty to ensure compliance with the principles of processing personal data which are set out in Article 5(1) and 5(2) of the GDPR. These principles are summarised as follows:
- process it lawfully, fairly, and in a transparent manner
- collect it only for one or more specified, explicit and legitimate purposes, and do not otherwise use it in a way that is incompatible with those purposes
- ensure it is adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary for the purpose it is processed
- keep it accurate and up-to-date and erase or rectify any inaccurate data without delay
- where it is kept in a way that allows you to identify who the data is about, retain it for no longer than is necessary
- keep it secure by using appropriate technical or organisational security measures
- be able to demonstrate your compliance with the above principles
- respond to requests by individuals seeking to exercise their data protection rights (for example the right of access)

Yes.
Each department has measures to prevent unauthorised access to paper records stored in filing cabinets. Electronic systems are accessible by authorised users and are password protected. Laptops are encrypted. PPSN data is processed and accessible only for the stated purposes.
