Update on the delivery of the National Broadband Plan - Summer 2022

With the ramping up of NBP fibre network rollout by National Broadband Ireland (NBI) since the start of 2020, more and more people are now able to access the high-speed broadband connections they need.

As of 8 July 2022, NBI is reporting:

Rollout:

  • 11,000km of fibre cable installed by NBI
  • 314,000 premises with fibre designs completed
  • 39,000 poles upgraded by Openeir or added by NBI
  • 200,000 premises have had pole and duct upgrades completed or are taking place
  • 64,000 premises have been passed by the NBI Network with build works ongoing in all 26 counties across the country
  • Over 70,000 premises available for pre-order/order across 23 counties

Connections:

  • 15,000 connections to the NBP network have been completed
  • 2,000 first time connections each month and this is expected to increase

NBI is reporting a take up rate of over 30% in areas where high-speed fibre broadband has been available over six months, well ahead of expectations at this early stage of the rollout.

More information on the rollout planand on the current Key Indicators statistics can be found on the NBI website.

(Please note, these statistics are updated by NBI, on a monthly basis.)

Making Progress in 2022

Delivering fibre to all homes in the Intervention Area is gathering momentum and NBI are forecasting that it will see over 100,000 homes and business with access to world class broadband infrastructure by the end of this year.

A number of key achievements have been made since the Winter 2021 update, including:

  • 15,000 premises across the country are now connected to the new high-speed broadband network. In total, 70,000+ are already able to pre-order or order a connection
  • More than 260 Broadband Connection Points live and supporting public access to broadband in some of Ireland's most rural communities
  • 369 schools installed and ready to bring high-speed services to the classroom. NBI on track to meet connections targets for all schools within the IA.

Communications Update

NBI has created a dedicated portal to support Ireland’s elected representatives to proactively search for information relevant to their county/local area.

The portal provides an up-to-date picture of NBI’s deployment schedule across the 227 Deployment Areas (DAs) in all 26 Counties. A particular county can be selected to view an update relevant to that area – including the overall number of premises in the Intervention Area, the overall NBP investment in the county, the number of premises passed to date and the status of each of the Deployment Areas with the anticipated date for connection over the lifetime of the project.

If elected representatives are assisting a specific constituent or local business, they will also be able to search by Eircode to get the latest update for that premises.

The dedicated webpage is updated monthly by NBI.

Consumer Update

Currently, 42 RSPs are actively offering services on the NBP Network to customers across Ireland, with over 70,000 premises now able to order and pre-order high-speed connections across 23 Counties (Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Limerick, Louth, Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow).

You can find out more about getting connected and the RSPs set up and certified to sell network services on the NBP network on the NBI website.

Broadband Connection Points

Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) provide wireless connectivity, to support remote working and connected communities by providing public access to free high-speed broadband in advance of the main fibre deployment under the National Broadband Plan.

The roll out of BCPs forms a fundamental part of the Government’s investment in and strategy for enhancing and developing remote working capabilities in all parts of Ireland.

These hubs have been developed to become digitally enable community assets – not only as remote working facilities but also to deliver a range of activities including:

  • Remote eHealth consultation booth pilot projects
  • Digital skills training for children and young people
  • A new national film festival that will be screened at BCP locations

Hundreds of new users across the country are signing up to their local BCP every month, with thousands of returning users as of June 2022. These figures, as well as data on bandwidth usage across all BCP sites, can be provided by DECC upon request.

Public Locations

Since the start of this year, a further 13 public BCPs have gone live across Counties Carlow, Cork, Donegal, Kerry, Leitrim, Limerick, Mayo, Monaghan, Tipperary and Westmeath bringing high-speed broadband one step closer to local citizens, businesses and visitors to these areas.

More widely, as of 8 July 2022, 268 BCPs are live on the NBI Network.

National Schools

Some 679 National Schools within the Intervention Area will be connected to high-speed broadband under the National Broadband Plan, supported by the Department of Education and Skills.

In the last six months, a further 186 National Schools have been installed and now, almost 370 National Schools are connected or ready to connect through an RSP.

As of 8 July 2022, 369 schools are installed by NBI and read for connection to the high-speed network.

Queries on availability in your area

The Blue area on the NBP map represents areas already covered by commercial operators providing high speed broadband services – and which does not fall under the NBP State Intervention Area.

Any consumer in a Blue area who is experiencing difficulties in obtaining high speed broadband - that is defined as minimum speeds of 30Mbps download and 6Mbps upload – should contact their broadband service provider to investigate the issue and to determine the reason why broadband speeds are slow or that service cannot be provided.
