Appointments to the Supreme Court and the High Court - 2 November 2022

At its meeting today, the government agreed to nominate the Hon. Mr. Justice Maurice Collins as an ordinary judge of the Supreme Court and Her Honour Judge Melanie Greally as an ordinary judge of the High Court for appointment by the President of Ireland.

The Supreme Court vacancy arose following the retirement of the Hon. Mr. Justice Frank Clarke on 10 October 2021.

The High Court vacancy arose following the appointment of the Hon. Ms. Justice Nuala Butler to the Court of Appeal on 17 October 2022.

The government has taken the necessary steps to formally advise President Higgins of the nominations in accordance with constitutional practice.

In accordance with articles 13.9 and 35.1 of the Constitution, judicial appointments are made by the President acting on the advice of the government.

Her Honour Judge Melanie Greally

  • entered the Bar in 1991
  • appointed to the Circuit Court in November 2014
  • assigned to the Dublin Circuit in July 2015
