Statement by Taoiseach Micheál Martin on the outcome of parliamentary elections in Hungary

I wish to congratulate Péter Magyar and his Tisza party on winning the parliamentary elections in Hungary.

I also commend the Hungarian people who turned out in such high numbers to exercise their democratic choice in today’s elections.

I look forward to working with Prime Minister elect Magyar to strengthen bilateral relations between Ireland and Hungary based on our shared membership of the European Union and our commitment to shared values.

As holders of the EU Presidency, Ireland welcomed Hungary to the EU in May 2004. As we prepare for a new Presidency term this July, we look forward to working with the incoming Hungarian Government. Marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, we also hope to reinforce bilateral ties between our states.
