Taoiseach Micheál Martin to meet the Prime Minister of Luxembourg

Taoiseach Micheál Martin will meet with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Luc Frieden, as part of a two-day visit to the Luxembourg beginning today (Thursday).

During the meeting, the Taoiseach and the Prime Minister will discuss economic issues, including European competitiveness and EU-US trade negotiations. They will also discuss international issues, including developments in Ukraine and Gaza.

During his visit, the Taoiseach will also meet with representatives of Irish businesses in Luxembourg and hear from Irish community representatives.

On Friday, the Taoiseach will meet with the President of the European Investment Bank, Nadia Calviño, to discuss the EIB’s role in supporting European competitiveness through investment in essential infrastructure, and Ireland’s ongoing partnership with the EIB in delivering on the government’s priorities.

Speaking ahead of the visit the Taoiseach said:

“I am looking forward to a substantive exchange with Prime Minister Frieden, building on the excellent meeting that we had when he visited Dublin last September.

“Bilateral relations between Ireland and Luxembourg are excellent, and we are like-minded partners on many issues.

“We will discuss the significant economic issues where we have a shared interest, including the competitiveness agenda, deepening capital markets in Europe, proposals for the EU’s next seven-year budget, and EU-US trade negotiations.

“We will also discuss international issues, including the Middle East where the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza must be addressed immediately.

"I am also looking forward to meeting President of the European Investment Bank, Nadia Calviño. The EIB is a valued partner and each year the bank finances approximately €1 billion for projects in Ireland across key sectors, including water, housing, and energy."
