Taoiseach to attend European Political Community summit in Armenia

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is in Yerevan today (Monday, 4 May 2026) for a meeting of the European Political Community, which will be attended by around 50 leaders from across Europe. The Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, has also been invited as a guest.

The summit meeting has the theme “Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe”, and discussions will focus on geopolitical developments, economic resilience, and security.

While there, the Taoiseach will participate in a roundtable discussion on strengthening connectivity and economic security; attend a meeting on support for Moldova; and join the second meeting of the European Coalition against Drugs.

He will also take the opportunity to meet bilaterally with a number of fellow leaders.

The Taoiseach will also extend an invitation to his colleagues to attend the next meeting of the EPC, which Ireland will host in Dublin in November.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, the Taoiseach said:

“I look forward to joining leaders from across Europe at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan.

“The European Political Community is an important forum to discuss challenges faced by the wider European continent, including those linked to continuing Russian aggression in Ukraine, global instability and the consequences of conflict in the Middle East.

“It is also a good opportunity for leaders to discuss how we can better cooperate to ensure economic security, including energy connectivity and supply. The current energy crisis demonstrates that we must deepen our energy links and invest in interconnections and update our electricity grids to support the process of decarbonisation and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

“I also welcome discussions among partners on strengthening cooperation to tackle organised crime and drug trafficking across Europe.

“Responding to Europe’s competitiveness challenges and to the changed security landscape will be an important focus for our EU Presidency, which begins in July.

“I look forward to welcoming members of the European Political Community to Dublin for its next summit meeting in November.”
