The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media, Catherine Martin TD, has appointed six new members to the Board of the Irish Manuscripts Commission (IMC). These appointments were made following an open competition operated by the Public Appointments Service. Appointments to the Board will be for an initial period of 5 years with an option to extend the term of engagement for a second term of 5 years.
The six new board members are:
- Dr Robert Armstrong (TCD)
- Professor Marie Coleman (QUB)
- Dr Peter Crooks (TCD)
- Professor Lindsey Earner-Byrne (UCC)
- Dr Elaine Farrell (QUB)
- Dr Niamh Howlin (UCD)
The IMC is a public body founded in 1928. Its remit is based on the principles of dissemination, preservation and promotion of primary source materials in public and private ownership for the histories and cultural heritage of Ireland. Since its first publication in 1930 IMC has preserved in print 207 editions (in 223 volumes) of manuscript sources covering the medieval period through to the twentieth century. These publications sit alongside 51 issues of its serial publication — Analecta Hibernica — for shorter documentary sources. Through its Digital Editions service out-of-print IMC editions can be accessed and downloaded online for free. IMC is constantly adding to its Digital Resources making it a comprehensive point of access to the documents required by anyone writing about Irish history.
Speaking today Minister Martin said:
“I am delighted to welcome the six new members to the Board and wish them the very best during their terms. Their skills and expertise will be a valuable addition to the Irish Manuscripts Commission. I also want to thank Board members whose terms have expired, for their strong contributions over several years."
