Virtual Tour of the European Parliament on Multilingualism Day 2020
The Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht, Catherine Martin TD, and the Government Chief Whip and the Minister of State for the Gaeltacht and Sport, Jack Chambers TD, have encouraged Irish speakers to take a virtual tour of the European Parliament on Multilingualism Day which will be held online this year.
People will be able to watch a live stream of the Function Room, the heart of the European Parliament, on Multilingualism Day, Saturday the 26th of September. They will have the opportunity to learn about the European Parliament and about the professional opportunities available there during various sessions on the work and life of translators and interpreters.
Among the live sessions, there will be an information session on the Function Room, where the most important debates and votes of the European Parliament take place. An insight will be given into the life of the translators and interpreters who work in the Parliament, which facilitates the work carried out in 24 languages. An account of what is involved with a translation training period in the European Parliament and how to apply shall be given, and there will be an opportunity to hear from former trainees about their experience in the Parliament.
Minister Martin stated, “Diversity of language and culture lays at the very heart of the European Union. Multilingualism Day will give us the opportunity to see that diversity in action. I would strongly recommend that secondary school and university students attend this virtual tour in order to better understand the employment opportunities available to Irish speakers in the European Union.”
The Minister for State Chambers stated, “The work of the Irish language translators and interpreters in the EU ensures that citizens can follow the work of their elected representatives. This is also an amazing opportunity for Irish speakers who have an interest in a profession in the EU’s institutions, and to work in a multicultural and multilingual environment which is progressive and motivating.”
