The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, TD, and the Minister with responsibility for Sport, Brendan Griffin, TD, today congratulated Padraig McCarthy and the Irish Eventing team on their medal successes at the World Equestrian Games.
Minister Ross said: “I would like to congratulate Sarah Ennis, Sam Watson, Cathal Daniels and Padraig McCarthy for their outstanding performance to achieve the silver medal in the World Championship. I would also like to congratulate Padraig McCarthy on his individual silver medal. It is a remarkable achievement to be the first Irish eventing team ever to win a medal at a World Equestrian Games. I am delighted that today’s result means that our Eventing Team have successfully qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Olympic qualification is a huge achievement, and is a credit to the hard work and commitment of the team and their coaches, led by team manager Sally Corscadden.”
Minister Griffin said: “I would like to congratulate the Irish Eventing Team who today won the silver medal in the World Championship in North Carolina, and qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. I would like to recognise the incredible performance of Padraig McCarthy to secure the silver medal in the individual competition. I know this year’s World Equestrian Games have suffered the impacts of Tropical Storm Florence, so it is a tribute to the focus and determination of the Irish riders to achieve this terrific result. I am delighted to see that our wonderful summer of Irish sporting success is continuing, and I hope to see further success for Irish riders at the World Equestrian Games.”
