What you can do

Walking, wheeling and cycling takes up to 660,000 cars off the road each day in Ireland’s five largest metropolitan areas. By reducing our use of transport fuel, we can lessen the impact of the energy crisis and help deliver on our climate ambitions. Saving energy saves money.

Here are some steps you can take to help reduce your use:

Walk, cycle or wheel for shorter journeys:

If your trip is less than 2km, can you walk or cycle? Of all journeys under 2km, 57% are made by car.

Use new and improved cycle lanes, greenways and footpaths in your area.

Choose public transport more often:

Reduced fares for many are now in place, while the prepaid TFI Leap Card offers users the lowest public transport fares, often up to 30% cheaper than cash single tickets and is valid on bus, train and tram services across the TFI network as well as on many commercial bus services.

Even small reductions in car use can have a big impact

  • Could you reduce your weekly car journeys by 20%?
  • Could you switch part of your journeys to public transport?
  • What about park and ride?
  • Carpool for work, school or sports.

When you do drive, reduce your fuel costs by:

  • Planning your weekly travel – can you do the same tasks over fewer journeys?
  • Drive smoothly – avoid heavy braking and acceleration
  • Maintain your vehicle – pump your tyres, avoid carrying heavy items in the boot, remove roof boxes when not in use
  • Reduce your speed on long journeys.

Switch to an electric vehicle when the time is right

If you are planning to change your car, consider an electric vehicle.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are a key part of Ireland’s transport transition, alongside reduced car dependency.

What you can do:

  • Consider an EV when replacing your car
