To use MessagingIE, you first need to get a verified MyGovID account. MyGovID is the Irish government’s secure online identity service. You can access it here www.mygovid.ie
You can access MessagingIE in two ways:
- From a notification link — for example, you may receive an email or text message with a link to a message
- Directly in your browser — go to messaging.services.gov.ie
Logging in
The messaging.services.gov.ie link will bring you to a secure MyGovID login page, as shown here:
● Enter your MyGovID credentials to verify your identity.
● Once verified, you’ll be logged in to MessagingIE automatically, and your account will be there for you. There’s no need for a separate account or password — your MyGovID login handles this for you.
Consent to use MessagingIE
When you sign in to MessagingIE for the first time, you will be asked to provide your consent to receive electronic messages from Public Sector Bodies (PSBs). You need to give this consent before any new messages can be delivered to your MessagingIE inbox.
After logging in, a consent screen will appear. You must scroll to the bottom of the message to read the terms and activate the ‘Accept’ or ‘Decline’ buttons, as shown here:
If you select ‘Accept’
● You will begin receiving secure electronic communications from participating PSBs through MessagingIE.
● You will be taken directly to your MessagingIE inbox
If you select ‘Decline’
● You will still be able to open and use your MessagingIE inbox
● You may continue to view any messages previously delivered (for example legacy messages migrated from the Digital Postbox)
● However, no new messages will be delivered to you via MessagingIE
● A banner will appear at the top of the messages page informing you that you have opted out, with a link to update your preference at any time
What to expect from your MessagingIE service
● PSBs that are providing a services to you may send you letters, documents, and messages through MessagingIE
● MessagingIE will notify you when new messages are delivered
● Messages sent to you may contain personal data, including in some cases, special categories of personal data

Troubleshooting
● I don’t have a MyGovID account
You must create a verified MyGovID account before using MessagingIE. You can find more information here: https://www.mygovid.ie/en-IE/HowDoISignUp
● The link in my email or text doesn’t work
Try copying and pasting the link directly into your browser’s address bar. Alternatively, go to messaging.services.gov.ie and log in with your MyGovID.
● I’m being asked to link another email to my MessagingIE account
You may be asked to link another email to your MessagingIe account. Don’t worry, this happens when the email you used when registering your MyGovID is different from the one used by the Public Service Body to contact you.If you recognise the email address as your own, you can confirm the link. If not, you should contact the PSB directly.
● I forgot my MyGovID password
Use the “Forgot your password?” option on the MyGovID login page to reset it.
● I’m still having problems
If you cannot access MessagingIE after checking the above, contact the government or public service that sent you the message for support.
● I’m not receiving any messages to my inbox
Check your consent preferences. You may have declined or revoked consent which will disable all electronic messaging to your inbox. If you have done so, there’s a banner displayed at the top of your Inbox screen with a link to reinstate it.If you clicked on ‘accept’ in the consent screen but you are still not receiving messages, contact the relevant government service that sent you the message.
Accessing messages
When you follow your email notification link you must log into the messaging system. The Messaging page is displayed, showing any messages you have received to your account.
View messages by status
At the top of the page, you will see two tabs:
- Unread – this is displayed by default and shows messages you have not yet read.
- All - displays all messages you have received (both read and unread).
Click on the desired tab to filter messages accordingly.
Understanding the message list
The main message list displays messages organised by date and subject. You can scroll through your messages by date to find any past messages you wish to access.
● Date: The date the message was received.
● Details: A clickable link to the message content.
Reading a message
Click on a Message:
Select the Details link in the message list to open and read the full message.
Message content page
The message opens in its own separate view. Key components of the message are:
- Subject Line: Title of the message (e.g., "TV Licence").
- Message Excerpt: Brief summary of the message content.
- Body: Contains the details of the message (e.g., instructions or attachments).
Return to message list
Click on the "Back" link at the bottom of the message to return to the main list.
Accessing your profile page
You can access your My Profile page from the menu (☰) in the top right corner of the MessagingIE screen.
The profile page displays information from your MyGovID account, such as your name, PPSN (hidden by default but you can click to reveal), and email contact details. This information is shown for reference only and only you can see it. Public Service Bodies cannot access your profile page.
Updating your details
Updating personal details (name, email, etc.) cannot be done within MessagingIE.
If you need to change your details, you must update them in your MyGovID account:
Any changes you make in MyGovID will flow through automatically the next time you log in to MessagingIE.
Information held by government departments
It’s important to note that Public Sector Bodies (PSBs) and government departments do not rely on the MessagingIE profile to contact you.
Each PSB uses the details it holds in its own systems (such as your email address, PPSN, or date of birth) to send messages to the correct recipient.
If you need to update details held by a specific department, you should contact that department directly.
Updating or changing your consent
You can change your consent preference at any time from within your MessagingIE profile. This allows you to either reinstate consent after previously declining, or withdraw consent after previously accepting.
How to Update Your Consent
- Select the Menu (top-right corner).
- Choose My Profile.
- Scroll to the section titled Enable or Disable Electronic Messages.
- The screen will display your current status (e.g., MessagingIE is currently Enabled or Disabled).
- Click Update to change your preference.
- Confirm your choice when prompted.
Effects of changing consent
If you select ‘accept’ on the consent screen
You will begin receiving new secure messages from PSBs through MessagingIE.
If you selection ‘decline’ on the consent screen
You will no longer receive new messages through MessagingIE. You will still be able to view any messages previously delivered.
Your preference takes effect immediately. You may update it again at any time should your circumstances change.
You can change your preference at any time, by clicking on the link in the banner displayed above your inbox, shown here below.
