Species: West European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus). Irish name: An Gráinneog.
Despite its non-native status, the hedgehog is considered naturalised in the Irish environment. The hedgehog is probably one of our most recognisable mammals due to its characteristic spines. Hedgehogs are generally solitary, non-territorial and nocturnal.
Nests tend to be occupied for a short time before they move on to another location. Hedgehogs are highly active animals, they need to be able to move freely through a well-connected range of habitats to find food, mates and areas to nest.
During the active season from early spring to autumn, they rest up by day in nest sites, typically in hedgerows, rough grassland and loose leaf piles. Hedgehog houses can provide additional opportunities to sleep, hibernate, and raise their young. Hedgehog nest boxes are typically made of wood, with a small entrance hole to keep out predators like foxes and cats.
