OPW and Limerick City and County Council announce progression of the €12m Castleconnell Flood Relief Scheme to Detailed Design

The Office of Public Works (OPW) and Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) today, 26 January, announced the progression of the €12 million Castleconnell Flood Relief Scheme to detailed design stage, following An Coimisiún Pleanála’s approval of planning permission. Once complete, this scheme will provide flood protection to some 50 properties in Castleconnell.

Speaking today, Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Minister Moran said “I am very pleased to announce that commencing the detailed design for the €12m Castleconnell Flood Relief Scheme will allow for OPW Direct Labour to commence construction in 2027. This significant milestone will allow us to protect homes and properties identified as being at risk in the area, giving peace of mind to the local residents”.

The approved scheme, progressed by LCCC in partnership with the OPW and designed by JBA Consulting & Egis Ireland Ltd (formerly JB Barry & Partners), will deliver a suite of flood defences for the village, including flood walls and embankments alongside the River Shannon, demountable flood barriers, targeted road-raising, culvert upgrades and drainage improvements.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, welcomed the progress, saying: “The grant of planning consent from An Coimisuín Pleanála means we can now move forward with confidence, as we turn ambition and plans for Castleconnell into action and delivery. This is a critical milestone in delivering long-term protection for Castleconnell and ensuring the community is better prepared for extreme weather events.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery added: “This is genuinely welcome news for Castleconnell. This scheme will reduce the risk to homes, safeguard local jobs and protect the heart of the village so that Castleconnell can thrive with greater resilience.”

The Castleconnell Flood Relief Scheme is now advancing to the landowner agreement, detailed design stage. Limerick City and County Council, in partnership with the OPW and appointed engineering consultants, will focus on fulfilling all conditions associated with planning approval to ensure the timely progression of the project.

Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly commented: “This is a significant step forward for this vital project. It allows us to advance to detailed design, ensuring the scheme is delivered to the highest environmental and engineering standards. We remain committed to working closely with the OPW and our project partners to bring this vital project to fruition.”

Ongoing communication and engagement with landowners and the Castleconnell community will be maintained to keep all stakeholders informed throughout the process.
