Tánaiste & Minister O’Donovan Visit New Red Panda Habitat in Dublin Zoo

New habitat one of several capital projects funded by €2m boost in Government funding

The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar, T.D. and the Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works Patrick O’Donovan, T.D. today (Wednesday, the 16th of June) visited Dublin Zoo to view progress on a number of capital projects funded by a €2 million boost in Government funding, including a new red panda habitat.

The Tánaiste said:

“Nothing quite captures the imagination like Dublin Zoo. I remember coming here myself as a kid and being fascinated by seeing the animals up close and learning about what they eat and how they live. Now when I take my nephews, I see the experience through their eyes and it’s a joy to watch.

I know it’s been a really difficult year for the Zoo so I’m really happy the Government could respond by investing a capital grant of €2 million. We’re determined to make sure the Zoo gets through this period and thrives once again.

The red pandas look very happy in their new habitats. I’m looking forward to bringing my nephews to visit. With the extended opening hours and good weather, which will hopefully stay, it’s a great day out and a wonderful asset right in the heart of the Phoenix Park.”

Minister O’Donovan stated:

“I am delighted to be here today to see first-hand the great progress that is happening within Dublin Zoo, and see how the Government funding has made a difference especially with the construction of world class habitats for both the Red Panda and the Snow Leopard. These works will enhance the living conditions for these animals, while also expanding the visitor experience for the members of the public, both young and old.”

The €2 million Government grant to Dublin Zoo formed part of a €3 million package to both Dublin Zoo and Fota Wildlife Park, announced in December 2020, given in acknowledgement of the challenges faced by the two facilities.

The Dublin Zoo grant is funding works to the red panda habitat, the snow leopard habitat, assisted toilets, a compost facility and some smaller capital works.
