The department holds responsibility for the development of the legislative and regulatory framework for broadcasting and for certain media in Ireland. It is also responsible for policy in relation to the funding of the public service broadcasters, RTÉ and TG4, and the development of the broadcasting sector in general.
Ensuring safety online is important for our society, especially for our children. Preventing harm coming about through online services is a complex issue. Effective solutions rely on the active engagement of all stakeholders, including Government, technology companies and parents.
The Action Plan for Online Safety 2018 - 2019 was the Government’s co-ordinated plan to implement actions that were achievable and that would have the greatest impact on online safety for everyone in Ireland.
An example of Government action is the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022, which has established a multi-person Media Commission (known as Coimisiún na Meán), established the regulatory framework for online safety and updated the regulation of television broadcasting and video on-demand services.
