The photograph below shows a hedgerow that was severely cut and grubbed in County Tipperary in 2020. The length of hedgerow affected was approximately 640m (152m of which were situated along the road), spread over three fields. A small section, of approximately 12m of hedgerow was removed. The work took place in August 2020. NPWS investigated following receipt of a report from a member of the public. In court in January 2021, the landowner pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined €1000. The Judge took into account his early guilty plea and the fact that he showed receipts and pictures showing that 400 hawthorn whips had been planted on the site. In addition, the landowner received a 5% reduction in his Basic Farm Payment on foot of a Cross Compliance Report issued to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and the Marine.
