PGI Application for Irish Grass Fed Beef

Legal Basis - Regulation (EU) No 1151/2012 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 November 2012 on quality schemes for agricultural products and foodstuffs
In August 2020, following scrutiny by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), a national opposition procedure was held for the PGI application by An Bord Bia on behalf of producers for Irish Grass-Fed Beef. Following that consultation, in November 2020, the DAFM lodged the application documents (single document and product specification document) with the European Commission.
Following scrutiny by the European Commission which involved the DAFM and An Bord Bia responding to Commission queries, the Commission published the PGI application for the ‘EU/third country opposition procedure’/consultation on 08 December 2021. This consultation period ended on 8 March 2022.
On 1 March 2022, the European Commission notified the DAFM that the UK authorities had submitted a ‘Notice of Opposition’. A letter from the European Commission received by the DAFM and the UK authorities on 14 April 2022:
• invited the applicant and the opponent to engage in appropriate consultations for a period of three months from the date of this letter
• requested that the DAFM inform the European Commission of the results of these consultations
On 11 July 2022, consultations between the DAFM and An Bord Bia with their Northern Ireland and UK counterparts were successfully concluded, with agreement that the geographical area covered by the application will be extended to include Northern Ireland. The revised application single document and product specification document have been lodged with the European Commission, which will examine the revised application and advise on next steps.
The change to the geographical area will require the European Commission to republish the application for a further three-month so-called opposition/consultation period for EU Member States and Third Countries. If there is no opposition, it is hoped that application could proceed for registration.
Following scrutiny by the European Commission the revised PGI application was published for the 3 month ‘EU/third country opposition procedure’/consultation on 4th August 2023.
