State Action Plans for Aviation Emissions Reduction form part of a global initiative through the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to assist countries to strategically plan measures to reduce CO2 aviation emissions, and to support the Long-Term Aspirational Goal of net-zero CO2 emissions from international aviation by 2050.
The global approach to decarbonisation of the industry is based on ICAO’s ‘basket of measures’ which identifies four pillars from which reductions are to be realised. These are aircraft technology improvements, operational improvements, increased development and use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and global market-based measures such as the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.
Ireland’s State Action Plan for Aviation Emissions Reduction summarises activities at European Union, European Civil Aviation Conference, and national level, to reduce CO2 emissions from aviation following the ICAO basket of measures approach.
The updated State Action Plan has been submitted to ICAO for publication.
