Complementary Therapies

The Professional Regulation Unit co-ordinates the department’s approach to the practice of complementary therapy (excluding products for which the Medicines Unit is responsible)

General policy on complementary therapy is informed by the 2005 Report of the National Working Group on the Regulation of Complementary Therapists. In line with a recommendation of the Working Group, the department supports greater voluntary self-regulation of the sector.

Although people who provide complementary therapies are not subject to professional statutory regulation they are subject to legislation and regulation including consumer legislation, competition, contract and criminal law.
