Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC) - Article 17 Update to Ireland's Marine Strategy Part 2: Monitoring Programme (Article 11)

Ireland’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) Monitoring Programmes have been developed to provide a comprehensive overview of the environmental status of our marine waters.

The information gathered within these programmes allows us to:

  • track progress in achieving Good Environmental Status (GES)
  • assess changes in pressures on our marine environment
  • identify where measures are required to improve the health of our seas.

The strategy includes revised monitoring programmes to address new environmental targets adopted in 2020, to gather information to allow an assessment of the effects of climate change and to incorporate citizen science.
