Post-Primary Upskilling Programmes


Upskilling programmes are designed to upskill already registered post-primary teachers to meet the Teaching Council’s curricular subject requirements in an additional subject.

The programmes are delivered on a part-time, flexible basis allowing greater participation and flexibility.

Applications should be made directly to the appropriate higher education institute (HEI).

Dioplóma Iarchéime sa Ghaeilge do Mhúinteoirí

Trinity College Dublin, alongside Marino Institute of Education, offer an innovative two-year programme aimed at enhancing the skills of registered post-primary teachers in Irish. Programme participants will be able to register to teach Irish to Leaving Certificate level in schools post-graduation. This programme is free to registered post primary teachers.

The programme is provided in a flexible and innovative manner to enable broad participation, accommodating teachers in both full and part-time roles, as well as those situated across the country. This programme will be delivered in a way that enables participants to engage in new learning experiences across face-to-face, online and practice-based learning

Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching

UL’s two-year, part-time Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching will support you to meet the Teaching Council subject requirements for post-primary Mathematics

This tailored programme supports the national Teacher Supply Action Plan by upskilling ‘out-of-field’ maths teachers and improving standards in maths education.

This programme is fully funded by the Department of Education and Youth

Professional Diploma in Teaching Physics

The Professional Diploma in Teaching Physics is designed to upskill post-primary teachers to meet current Teaching Council subject requirements in Physics at the highest level.

The programme is free to eligible post-primary teachers and is fully funded by the Department of Education and Youth as part of the national strategy to support the implementation of STEM education and improve standards in physics education in post-primary schools by increasing the numbers of qualified teachers of physics.

Higher Diploma in Spanish for Teachers

The Higher Diploma in Spanish for Teaching (Post-Primary) is a part-time programme taken over 24 months. It aims to equip registered post-primary teachers with the skills to teach the curricular subject of Spanish at the post-primary level in Ireland after completing 65 credits over 24 months.

This innovative two-year Higher Diploma takes participants from A2 Spanish language level competence to the required B2.2 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It ensures that participants complete all curricular subject requirements for the Teaching Council including language, literature, and study abroad, and integrates collaborative and flexible learning models along with a commitment to deep reflective practice.

Postgraduate Diploma in French for Teachers

Trinity College Dublin was selected by the Department of Education and Youth to deliver this upskilling programme aimed at increasing the number of qualified post-primary teachers in French in Ireland.

The programme is delivered by the Department of French at Trinity, through the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies, in partnership with the School of Education.

Professional Diploma in Politics and Society for Teachers

The Professional Diploma in Politics and Society for Teachers is designed to support qualified post-primary teachers in gaining the subject knowledge and pedagogical skills needed to teach Politics and Society at second level.

This programmed explores key political and sociological concepts, develops inclusive teaching practices, and participants learn how to foster critical thinking and active citizenship among their students.

Fully funded by the Department of Education, this diploma offers a flexible, online learning experience tailored to the needs of busy teachers.

Higher Diploma in Computing in Computer Science

With the rapid adoption of Computer Science as a module in the Leaving Certificate as well as the development of new Computing and Digital curricula across secondary and primary level schools there is a strong demand for qualified teachers with computing skills.

This programme has been selected by the Department of Education and Youth to provide a recognised route into teaching Computer Science to Leaving Certificate Level. Thus, those who are teaching or would like to teach Leaving Certificate Computer Science (LCCS) subject can use this programme to obtain Teacher’s council recognition for Computer Science at second level.

Importantly, this programme is fully funded for second-level teachers by the Department of Education and Youth, ensuring that educators can upskill at no personal cost.
