Grants and jobs for researchers

Every researcher in the EU is entitled to take up training and employment opportunities funded by national scholarships and grants, even if they are not a citizen or resident of that country.

If you are not an EU national, please see the "Scientific Visa Package" for research opportunities and the conditions/formalities of entry.

Taxation of researchers

Usually, if you move to another country to work, you'll also have to pay tax there, but there are situations where researchers in the EU can continue paying tax in their home country.

If

  • you are a visiting PhD student
  • or your income comes from a public body in your home country

your income may covered by the bilateral tax agreements between your home country and your new country of residence. These agreements were created to avoid double taxation, but there is likely to be paperwork to complete before you move.

Find out more on income taxation in Europe.

Paying tax as a post-doc

Post-doctoral researchers will usually have to pay tax in their country of residence, either as

  • employees of a university/research institution, or
  • as self-employed workers conducting research in partnership with such institutions

Tax situation by country

As the terms of double taxation agreements can vary widely, please check the situation in the country you intend to move to.

For information on the taxation situation in Ireland, please see here.
