This Department operates three different categories of Home Tuition for the 2019/2020 school year

Category 1: Home Tuition for children with special educational needs and medical grounds

The purpose of this Home Tuition Scheme is to provide a compensatory educational service for children who, for a number of reasons such as chronic illness, are unable to attend school. The scheme also provides a compensatory educational service for children with special educational needs seeking an educational placement. Provision is also made for early educational intervention for children with autism.

Category 2: Home Tuition for reasons other than special educational needs and medical grounds

The purpose of this Home Tuition Scheme is to provide a temporary educational measure for a child who is temporarily without a school place, or without the offer of a school place and for whom a school place is being actively sought in a school recognised by the Department of Education and Skills. Application forms for this strand of Home Tuition are only available from the local Educational Welfare Officer, contact details available on the TUSLA website .

As outlined in the circular a second strand of this scheme is for children in care, only, who are without a school place due to emergency placement or placement disruption. Application forms for this strand are only available from the appointed social worker

Strand 1: Application forms for this scheme may be obtained from your local Educational Welfare Officer, through your local Educational Welfare Service which is part of the Child and Family Agency, contact details available on the TUSLA website .

Category 3: Home Tuition for Students on Maternity Related Absences

The purpose of this scheme is to provide home tuition to students who are enrolled in a recognised school at post primary level studying at junior or senior cycle and whose education may be disrupted due to pregnancy.

Home Tuition Payments

Latest Payments News

The Department is pleased to announce that the rates for home tuition payments have increased for all tuition provided from the 01 September 2019. The new rates are:

    Fully Qualified Primary Teacher € 38.33 per hour
    Fully Qualified Post Primary Teacher € 46.04 per hour
    Modified Rate € 34.28 per hour

Payment of Home Tuition

Home tuition payments are made directly by this Department to the approved tutor acting on behalf of the parent/ legal guardian once a payment claim form is received. Detailed information and all claim forms required are listed below:
