The Department of Education operates three different categories of home tuition.
Category 1: Home tuition for children with special educational needs and medical grounds
This scheme is for children who, for a number of reasons such as chronic illness, are unable to attend school. The scheme is also for children with special educational needs who are seeking an educational placement. Provision is also made for early educational intervention for children with autism.
Category 2: Home tuition for reasons other than special educational needs and medical grounds
Strand 1 of this scheme provides a temporary educational measure for a child who is temporarily without a school place, or without the offer of a school place and for whom a school place is being actively sought in a school recognised by the Department of Education.
Strand 2 of this scheme is for children in care, who are without a school place due to emergency placement or placement disruption.
Category 3: Home tuition for students on maternity related absences
This scheme is to provide home tuition to students who are enrolled in a recognised school at post-primary level studying at junior or senior cycle and whose education may be disrupted due to pregnancy.
