The Department of Education and Skills operates three different categories of home tuition for the 2019/2020 school year.
Category 1: Home tuition for children with special educational needs and medical grounds
This scheme is provides a compensatory educational service for children who, for a number of reasons such as chronic illness, are unable to attend school. The scheme also provides a compensatory educational service for children with special educational needs seeking an educational placement. Provision is also made for early educational intervention for children with autism.
Category 2: Home tuition for reasons other than special educational needs and medical grounds
Strand 1 of this scheme provides a temporary educational measure for a child who is temporarily without a school place, or without the offer of a school place and for whom a school place is being actively sought in a school recognised by the Department of Education and Skills.
A second strand of this scheme is for children in care, only, who are without a school place due to emergency placement or placement disruption.
Category 3: Home tuition for students on maternity related absences
This scheme is to provide home tuition to students who are enrolled in a recognised school at post-primary level studying at junior or senior cycle and whose education may be disrupted due to pregnancy.
