Climate research and innovation across Government

The main Government Departments and Agencies involved in carrying out and supporting climate research and innovation are set out below.

These bodies are part of Government Departments or Agencies, for example, Met Éireann, Irish Research Council, or are statutory agencies under the aegis of a Department such as the Environmental Protection Agency.

Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment Undertakes and funds a range of climate relevant research programmes, particularly in the areas of climate, geosciences, environment, energy and inland fisheries. Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Responsible for national research and innovation policy. Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Manages a wide range of research activities and funds climate-related research directly and through the research programmes of Teagasc and the Marine Institute. Marine Institute / Teagasc

Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage Undertakes and funds a range of climate relevant research programmes in the areas of construction innovation, weather and climate modelling, climate services, climate monitoring, biodiversity and water. Department of Finance and the Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation  Actively providing funding and support through a joint research programme with the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) in climate macroeconomic modelling.
