The Annual Review and Outlook for Agriculture, Food and the Marine 2023 provides up-to-date information and statistical analysis from a variety of sources, to give a detailed overview of Ireland’s agri-food sector and an outlook for the future.
The agri-food sector is Ireland’s oldest and largest indigenous exporting sector, extends across the country and reaches over 180 countries worldwide. In 2022, the sector employed 164,900 people, representing 6.5% of the total workforce across 135,000 farms, 2,000 fishing vessels & aquaculture sites and some 2,000 food production & drink enterprises. The sector is responsible for 4.5 million hectares of agricultural land, over 800,000 hectares of forestry and produces 9% of Ireland’s exports each year.
This year’s publication includes chapters on Agri-Food Sector and the Economy; Farm Income and Structures; Agricultural Commodities and Inputs; Forestry; Fisheries & Aquaculture; Agri-Food Sector Trade; EU and International Policy; Environment; and Research.
Having a strong evidence base is essential for policy formation and implementation. The data and information included in this Annual Review and Outlook is intended as a resource to inform and to assist policy analysis over the next year. This is as we look to the continued sustainable development of the agri-food sector, , environmentally, economically and socially, as per Food Vision 2030 gov.ie - Food Vision 2030 - A World Leader in Sustainable Food Systems (www.gov.ie) our shared strategy for the decade ahead, with its stated ambition to be a ‘World Leader in Sustainable Food Systems’.
