Minister for Education Norma Foley has announced that recognised primary and post-primary schools in the Free Education Scheme will benefit from €20 million in additional capitation funding to be delivered during the mid-term break.
The €20 million funding is the first tranche of an overall additional €60 million funding announced as part of Budget 2024 measures designed to assist schools with increased day-to-day running costs such as heating and electricity. A further €40 million in funding will be delivered in 2024.
In addition, permanent core funding of €21 million announced in Budget 2024 is supporting a permanent restoration of funding for all recognised primary and post-primary schools in the Free Education Scheme. This will bring the basic rate of capitation to €200 per student in primary schools and to €345 in post-primary schools.
Minister Norma Foley said:
“As Minister for Education, a key priority of mine in Budget 2024 was to ensure additional supports for schools to assist them in the face of inflationary pressures with rising day-to-day running costs. I am pleased today to announce that €20 million in funding will be delivered during the mid-term break, to support all recognised primary and post-primary schools in the Free Education Scheme.
“This significant funding boost for schools comes at a key juncture in the school year, as we enter into the winter months when costs such as heating and electricity can be felt more acutely. In helping schools to manage their running costs, this funding will in turn benefit families and whole school communities.
“To ensure continuity of support in this area, a further €40 million will be delivered to schools in 2024. This is in addition to €21 million in permanent core funding announced in Budget 2024, which supports a permanent restoration of funding for all primary and post-primary schools in the Free Education Scheme.”
