Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD today (Friday) welcomed the appointment of Professor Martin Curley as the new Chief Information Officer for the Health Service Executive. Professor Curley was appointed following an open recruitment campaign conducted by the Public Appointments Service.
This is a key appointment in the context of developing our eHealth infrastructure and supporting health reform. The HSE Chief Information Officer has the dual mandate of leading the transformation of ICT within the health delivery system in support of fundamental health service reform as set out in the recent Sláintecare Report and also leading the development of an eHealth ecosystem within the Irish health system. This will involve bringing together key stakeholders across the public and private sectors in support of innovation and maximisation of investment in Ireland’s digital health infrastructure.
Commenting on the appointment, Minister Harris said:
“I would like to welcome the appointment of Professor. Martin Curley as Chief Information Officer in the HSE. Martin comes to us with a wealth of experience and a proven track record of achievement in digital innovation. The importance of eHealth has been recognised in the National Development Plan ‘Project Ireland 2040’ and he joins our health services community at a time of exciting change as we drive the implementation of our eHealth Strategy forward and examine the possibilities of digital supports to help meet the challenges of the Sláintecare report.”
The incoming Chief Information Officer has extensive experience in the digital sector including a number of years as Director of Intel Labs Europe and in the digital payments sector coupled with experience in public affairs and communications. Professor Curley has worked closely with the European Commission in a number of areas including Open Innovation 2.0. Professor Curley is an engineering graduate from UCD and holds a PhD in information systems from NUI Maynooth.
