Minister Foley welcomed the news, saying:
"My department is committed to providing modern, state-of-the-art facilities within new school buildings. This new school is of huge importance for families in the Kanturk area and I am sure they are now looking forward to seeing this project progress."
Minister O’Donovan said:
“This is an important investment for the town of Kanturk and for the children of the area. This school, when completed, will bring together the students from the two existing national schools within the town enabling them to learn and develop in co-operation in this wonderful new facility."
The Contract is to build a new 16-classroom school with three special education teacher rooms and will be located on a two-hectare greenfield site at the Mill Road. The new national school will facilitate the amalgamation of St. Colman’s Boys NS and the Convent of Mercy NS in the town. Cork County Council will construct a new link road from Mill Road to Bluepool Upper which will facilitate access to the new school.
Construction is due to start in the coming weeks and it is expected that the school will be completed in 18 months.
