Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney TD, welcomes the appointment of Staffan de Mistura as the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara.
Minister Coveney said
"Ireland is pleased that this important post has been filled, having been vacant since 2019. I am confident that Mr de Mistura, with his ability and extensive experience, will build on the commendable efforts of his predecessor, Mr. Horst Köhler, in contributing to a reinvigoration of the UN-led process on Western Sahara. I wish the new Personal Envoy well in this critical role. Ireland will continue to support the UN-led effort to make progress in the search for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, including through our membership of the Security Council, and we encourage all parties to engage constructively with Mr. de Mistura."
