Pádraig is originally from Wicklow but has been living in East Cork for the past 19 years. He is married with three children. He was appointed to the role of Director General of the Central Statistics Office (CSO) at the end of May 2012.
Pádraig is a career statistician having joined the CSO in November 1991 as a Statistician. He worked as a Statistician in Structural Business Statistics, Statistical Methodology and Balance of Payments. In 2001 Pádraig was appointed Senior Statistician in the Labour Market and Social Inclusion Division. Between 2007 and 2010 Pádraig was Director of Statistical Support & Innovation and Assistant Director General, Social & Demographic Statistics from September 2010 to May 2012.

Pádraig was elected Chair of the Bureau of the Conference of European Statisticians (CES) on June 25th 2021. The CES Bureau provides vision and direction to all activities of the Conference of European Statisticians, which drives the statistical work of the UNECE and is comprised of over 60 countries.
Pádraig is a graduate of University College Dublin where he completed his primary degree in 1989 and was awarded a Masters in Economics in 1990.
Outside of work he is actively involved in coaching Gaelic Football/Hurling to both adults and children. He played football for Wicklow at minor, U-21 and senior level. In his mid-twenties he moved to play his club football in Dublin with Kilmacud Crokes where he was lucky enough to be part of a successful team winning Dublin, Leinster and All-Ireland senior club medals. He has a real love of all outdoor activities including hill-walking and kayaking and has taken part in adventure races to keep fit. Pádraig is also a 2nd dan black belt in Taekwondo.
