Over the last year, we’ve all been dealing with the reality of rising energy bills. Many of us have made changes to reduce our energy use. Government is very aware of the impact this is having on households across the country and has put in place a range of supports to help those most at risk from increasing energy costs.
To help people with their energy bills this winter, three electricity credits of €150 will be applied to domestic electricity bills; one before Christmas, and one each in the January/February and March/April billing cycles.
The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) have announced moratoriums on disconnections for all domestic electricity and gas customers for the coming winter. The moratorium for customers registered as being particularly vulnerable will cover a six month period from 1 October 2023 until 31 March 2024. The moratorium for all domestic customers has been extended again this year from 1 December 2023 until 31 January 2024. For more information about the moratoria, and other consumer protections, please visit the CRU website.
If you are finding it difficult to pay your energy bills, please be advised:
- Contacting your energy supplier is really important
- You will not be disconnected if you are engaging with your supplier, so talking to them early is really important
- If you are registered with your supplier as a vulnerable customer there are extra protections from disconnection
- Suppliers will offer a repayment plan that takes into account your ability to pay if you have built up any debt
- Many suppliers are also signed up to the Energy Engage Code which offers a range of protections once you engage with your supplier
- Your energy supplier may have a hardship fund aimed at helping customers experiencing financial difficulty, more information on this can be found on your supplier’s website

The government is asking people, where safe and possible to do so, to turn their thermostat down and consider when they use larger appliances. Being mindful of when we use appliances, and for how long, can conserve energy and help lower bills.
