Ahead of Ireland’s forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, is today in Strasbourg to engage with members of the European Parliament.
With just two months before Ireland assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Minister Heydon took the opportunity to travel to Strasbourg to engage directly with MEPs on key legislative and policy priorities affecting the agri-food sector.
Speaking ahead of the meetings, Minister Heydon said:
“I am pleased to be in Strasbourg to engage directly with Members of the European Parliament on the key issues facing European agriculture and food systems. These discussions are particularly important as Ireland prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union later this year. Strong cooperation between the Council and the European Parliament is essential to delivering effective and balanced EU legislation. Ireland is committed to working constructively with MEPs to support a sustainable, competitive and resilient agri-food sector that delivers for farmers, fishers, as well as rural and coastal communities.”
During the visit, Minister Heydon will discuss a range of issues, including the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), food security, environmental sustainability, and measures to support farmers’ incomes and rural communities. Discussions will also cover the implementation of the Vision for Agriculture and Food, with a focus on ensuring a competitive, resilient and sustainable agri-food sector across the EU.
