The Sixth Nitrates Action Programme (NAP) gives effect to the requirements of the Nitrates Directive (91/676/EEC) and its purpose is to prevent pollution of surface waters and groundwater from agricultural sources, and to protect and improve water quality.

The Nitrates Directive forms an integral part of the Water Framework Directive and is one of the key instruments in the protection of waters from agricultural pressures.
